pure

Are there any chemicals in marlo products?

In our world, there are both natural and synthetic chemicals. Natural chemicals are produced by nature without any human intervention. Synthetic chemicals are manufactured with methods that are different from those that nature uses and they are not necessarily bad or unsafe. They may also be made from a natural product, meaning they are naturally derived. We strive to formulate with ingredients that are as pure as we can get them and to use as few as possible. We will always be transparent about the ingredients in our products.

Do you use preservatives in your products?
Only the good and safe ones! Preservatives are added to personal care and cosmetic products to prevent spoilage, undesirable chemical changes or microbial contamination that can lead to irritation or infections — just like food.

potent

So, why tomatoes?

Tomatoes are especially rich in potent minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that help fight skin-aging free radicals. They also fortify skin cells in the face of environmental stress and toxin build-up, which can have damaging effects on the skin.

How does the cream work?

Bloom Lush Revitalizing Cream is powered by our exclusive Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol. This multi-action cream is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and other vital nutrients that help to minimize the appearance of signs of aging, including lines and wrinkles, dehydration and skin that’s not so firm anymore. This deliciously rich moisturizer will make your skin glow with healthy beauty!

How does the cleanser work?

Bloom Lavish Whipped Cleanser uses a unique blend of cleansing oils to dissolve and gently lift away makeup, dirt and impurities, leaving skin refreshingly clean without stripping. Our formula is more of a cleansing cream, and we recommend that you first apply and spread it in the palms of your hands before adding water. When you apply the cleanser to your face, you will find that this unique texture invites you to massage your skin to effectively remove impurities while delivering all the goodies like our Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol – the youth-sustaining star ingredient. This cleansing ritual prepares your skin to receive all the great benefits of Bloom Lush Revitalizing Cream.

How often do you recommend washing your face?

Bloom Lavish Whipped Cleanser is gentle enough to use twice or more a day. However, be careful not to over-cleanse your face. Cleansing is an important first step in your skincare routine to ensure that you have a clean start before you apply your moisturizer.

How does your cream compare with other anti-aging creams on the market?

There are lots of anti-aging creams out there, but here’s how we stand out: Marlo Hydroponic Skincare® is formulated with hydroponically-grown tomatoes. These special tomatoes are nurtured in nutrient-dense water, as opposed to those grown in soil, which are subject to toxic chemicals and pesticides, and other soil impurities. Our Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol is derived from hydroponically-grown tomatoes and is the star ingredient in Marlo’s Bloom Lush Revitalizing Cream, which helps fight skin aging and delivers revitalized, more youthful-looking skin. And, not only are we doing the best that we can for your skin, but we are also doing the best that we can for the environment because we use the sustainable technology of hydroponics at our core!

sustainable

What is the definition of “natural,” “naturally derived,” and “organic”?

These terms can be confusing because there aren’t standardized government regulations for the meaning of “natural” and “organic” cosmetics. So, it’s really more of an interpretation than any kind of real definition, and useful for marketing purposes. Rather than relying on these vague terms, we think it is more accurate to say that all of our products are made of primarily plant-based ingredients.

Some say that “natural” means occurring in nature, while “naturally derived” means that it has been created using ingredients from naturally occurring sources.

“Organic cosmetics” has little meaning because, like “natural,” it is not regulated. However, organic farming is soil-based, meaning that it sometimes utilizes manure for fertilizer and is subject to soil contaminants like heavy metals, microbes, and other pollutants.

Marlo products go beyond traditional “organic” since there is no soil or manure involved in the growing process. Hydroponics are greener and cleaner!

do other ingredients in your products reduce the purity and potency of your hydroponic extracts?

There are other ingredients we use in our formulation, but Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol is the powerhouse ingredient that delivers numerous skin-protecting and renewing benefits. Other ingredients are there to help your skin absorb these great benefits and provide maximum effectiveness. Just take a look at our ingredient list and you’ll see that tomato is right at the top — it’s the star of the show! And all of our ingredients are 100% non-toxic.

Are hydroponic tomatoes better than non-hydroponic tomatoes?

Some studies have shown that hydroponic produce can be more flavorful and have higher levels of nutritional benefits when compared to conventional soil-grown produce. Hydroponic produce is also not subject to toxic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other soil impurities that can end up in soil-sourced extracts. We use grown-to-order hydroponic extracts and prioritize local, hands-on operations when possible so that consumption occurs at peak freshness — less transport time means they retain their vitamins and nutrients.

Are all of Marlo products organic?

The standard for organics has traditionally referred to soil-grown farming. Since we use hydroponically-grown tomatoes, Marlo goes beyond organic because we’ve eliminated any risk of soil contamination from toxic fertilizers, pesticides, heavy metals, pollutants, groundwater contamination or manure, which is used as fertilizer in organic farming. Marlo is cleaner and greener! We do not use genetically modified tomatoes. All of our products are 100% non-toxic and paraben-free, and we do not use extracts or ingredients that have been subject to pesticides.

Are the ingredients in Marlo products natural?

The word “natural” sounds great, but there really aren’t any hard and fast rules about what it means to be a natural cosmetic product. Lots of cosmetic brands say that they are natural, but in our opinion, some just use it as marketing language. And, some natural ingredients are not good for you!

There’s no such spin here! We can say that all of Marlo products are made of primarily plant-based ingredients and 100% non-toxic. They are completely free of parabens, gluten, dyes and pigments, pesticides, fragrance, animal-derived ingredients, benzoyl peroxide, plus a whole host of other nasties. Since we do use any animal-derived materials, our products are also vegan.

Is your manufacturing process 100% sustainable?

It is very difficult to make any manufacturing process 100% sustainable, but we strive to use sustainable practices every step of the way! We do our best to work with vendors who align with our vision for a more sustainable future.

We use hydroponic plants to make our skincare products, which means they are grown using water, not soil. In a hydroponic farming system, water is recycled and reused — hydroponics uses up to 90% less water and 70% less land than traditional farming. Hydroponic plants are grown in greenhouses, which means that there is no soil depletion, and since hydroponics doesn’t use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, there is no contaminated water run-off into fresh bodies of water. We also do not do any animal testing to make our products.

Our jars are made of 100% recyclable glass. And, we omitted the plastic liner that is often used inside the jar, which means that the size impression of the jar is true to the eye. The metallized cap is produced with a non-aerosol manufacturing process, which means that dangerous volatile organic compound (VOC) particles are not released into the environment, preserving air quality. And our tubes are made from 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. This means that 50% of the plastic in our tube is made from materials that have been recycled by consumers, like plastic bottles, which are repurposed into new packaging instead of ending up in a landfill or being dumped in the ocean.

Our carton is made from paper that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring that our packaging supplier complies with environmentally sound paper sourcing. Our supplier also uses Renewable Choice, a leading global provider of customized clean energy services, to support renewable energy and wind power at their plants.

Sustainability is at the core of our brand. We are constantly reviewing our processes to see if we can improve upon them. We seek to partner with suppliers that possess the same philosophy.

What do you mean by “sustainable beauty”?

We believe that beauty is only truly beautiful if it is sustainable. Marlo products create the perfect balance for a beautiful you AND a beautiful environment! From the very first moment, we put sustainability and caring for the environment at our core. We aim to create our skincare products while also being committed to respecting and protecting the environment. For more detailed information about our sustainable practices, see the question above about our manufacturing.

processing

what is distillation and how does the distillation process work?

Marlo uses gentle steam distillation to yield our powerful Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol, as opposed to traditional manufacturing processes, which can be harsher and more resource-intensive. Starting with fresh hydroponic tomatoes, steam allows the powerful extracts from the tomato to release, which are then carried to a condenser chamber, where they are re-liquified. Our proprietary techniques use minimal processing to preserve the hydroponic nutrients in all their raw, natural potency. It is important to note that we do not dilute our hydrosol!

Do you use fertilizers and pesticides to grow the tomatoes?

Hydroponics is the art and science of growing plants in water, not soil. Since hydroponic plants are not vulnerable to soil-borne pests, pollutants, heavy metals or other soil impurities, there is no need for toxic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or manure, which are used in conventional and/or organic farming. Hydroponics is a clean agricultural technology. Growing in greenhouses is considered controlled environment agriculture (CEA). This means that nutrients are precisely delivered to plants and growing is not subject to weather or other external forces — like climate change — which adversely affect crops.

Where do you source your tomatoes from?

We use grown-to-order hydroponic extracts and prioritize local, hands-on operations when possible. We continuously monitor and update our sources to ensure all aspects of sustainability are considered.

hydroponics

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the art and science of growing plants in water, not soil. Water that is enriched with minerals and nutrients is precisely delivered to plants. The water used in hydroponics is recycled and reused, so it significantly reduces the total amount of water consumed relative to traditional farming — hydroponics uses up to 90% less water and 70% less land in comparison! Since hydroponic growing does not involve soil, land is conserved, soil nutrients are preserved, and there isn’t any groundwater contamination. Hydroponic growing also eliminates the risk of soil-borne pests, toxic chemical fertilizers, pesticides and manure, and other soil impurities. Hydroponic farming leads to a healthier plant and a healthier environment.

What is hydroponic skincare?

We are the first company based entirely on hydroponics. Our formulas will all be powered by hydroponic plant-based extracts, meaning the active ingredient will come from hydroponically grown plants. Marlo aims to support and encourage hydroponic farming, a more sustainable way to farm that has a reduced negative impact on the environment.

How did you get the idea to make hydroponic skincare?

Marlo is the brainchild of Marjorie, a beauty marketer, and Renee, a cosmetic chemist, who have both spent years working in the beauty industry and are passionate about the environment. The idea came to Marjorie when she was taking a class on hydroponics and wondered if this could be a better way to formulate skincare, in a new kind of sustainable beauty company. Renee created a makeshift lab in her kitchen to experiment with ways to extract a pure and potent hydrosol from hydroponically-grown tomatoes. This hydrosol became our star ingredient, Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol, which contains super-concentrated levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, a potent anti-aging antioxidant. Read more of our story here.

Are all of your ingredients derived from plants that are hydroponically-grown?

Our active ingredients, such as Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol, will always be a hydroponic plant-based extract. Of course, there will be other ingredients that are needed to create the final product, and these will always be as pure, non-toxic, and sustainable as we can get them. We formulate with the low toxicity standards set by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

ingredients

You say that marlo contains plant-based, 100% non-toxic ingredients. What are they?

Our exclusive Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol is the key ingredient that drives efficacy. It is boosted by a combination of other delightful, non-toxic ingredients such as cocoa butter, grapeseed oil, shea butter, sodium hyaluronate, tamarind seed, soybean seed extract, and bilberry extract.

Some of the ingredients listed on your label don’t sound very natural. Please explain.

In addition to our plant-based ingredients we use non-toxic, safe synthetic ingredients, which are derived from natural sources. These help stabilize the formula to ensure all the good-for-you active ingredients continue to work to their fullest potential.

Do you use a natural preservative?

We use an effective preservative system that is a blend of multifunctional ingredients derived from vegetable sources that are free of parabens, isothiazolinones and formaldehyde donors.

Are your products vegan?

Yes, Marlo is free of any animal-derived materials.

Does marlo test on animals?

Absolutely not! Marlo is cruelty-free; we do not test on animals.

i have oily/acne-prone/menopausal skin. is your cream right for me?

Our cream is perfect for all skin types.

Does marlo use fragrance because I can smell fragrance in my cream.

Our cream is free of synthetic fragrance. However, we do use organic Geranium Oil at extremely low levels for its efficacious properties. This essential oil is known to effectively eliminate dead cells, tighten the skin, promote the regeneration of new skin, and diminish signs of aging. From an aromatherapeutic perspective, it has been known to help improve cognitive function, balance emotions by reducing feelings of stress, anxiety, sadness, fatigue and tension, and enhance concentration.

I see that the cream contains Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter, are these hydroponic?

Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter are grown on trees. The size and weight of the trees and their root systems do not handle the hydroponic process well. Only our Super-Hydroponic Hydrosol is derived from hydroponically grown tomatoes.

What is Tamarindus Indica Seed Polysaccharide?

Tamarindus Indica Seed Polysaccharide is the polysaccharide derived from the Tamarind Seed. This polysaccharide is the highly concentrated moisturizing component of Tamarind Seed and provides additional vitamins, minerals and amino acids to the skin to keep it healthy, hydrated and supple.
